Position Overview

The North Caribou Lake Education Authority is seeking a highly motivated and culturally

grounded Guidance and Career Education Department Head for our First Nation High

School in Weagamow Lake, Ontario. Reporting to the Principal, the successful

candidate will provide leadership, vision, and coordination of guidance and career

education services, ensuring students are supported academically, socially, emotionally,

and in post-secondary/career planning.


Key Responsibilities

 Lead and manage the Guidance and Career Education Department, including

program development, delivery, and evaluation.

 Provide academic counselling, supporting student success, course planning,

credit attainment and transition planning for post-secondary education, training

and employment.

 Collaborate with teachers, school staff, families and community partners to create

integrated student support plans.

 Coordinate career development initiatives — career fairs, job shadowing, resume

building, skills workshops and labour market information sessions.

 Promote culturally relevant guidance practices that reflect the strengths and

traditions of Weagamow Lake First Nation.

 Monitor student attendance, achievement, behavioural patterns and offer

interventions or referrals to services as appropriate.

 Contribute to department planning, budgeting and reporting.

 Provide leadership and supervision to guidance/career staff as applicable.

 Maintain accurate records of student counselling plans and transition outcomes.

 Attend professional meetings, workshops, and training to maintain best practices.

 Encourage student involvement in land-based learning and cultural activities.


Qualifications

 Bachelor’s degree in education, Counselling, Career Development, or related

field; master’s degree an asset.

 Valid Ontario Teachers College Teaching Certificate .

 Minimum of 3-5 years experience in student guidance, career education, or

counselling preferably in Indigenous or remote education settings.

 Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario curriculum, pathways planning and career

development practices.

 Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.

 Knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and contexts considered a strong

asset.

 Ability to work collaboratively with community, families, and service agencies.

 Commitment to student success, inclusion, and cultural affirmation.
